  • Aegir's Story

    A True Classic

    Origins

Aegir is an Alden design (#618H), built in 1936 by Casey Boat Building Co in Fairhaven, MA. She is presently located in Pelham, NY (Western Long Island Sound) and ready to be enjoyed by a new owner. No improvements or maintenance needed.

We acquired Aegir when our daughter was born, and we needed a family friendly boat. She is now off to college and it is sadly time to downsize.

    Restoration

We had Aegir restored in 2006-2007 by very capable shipwrights in Rhode Island. The Alden office aided in the restoration project and provided copies of the original drawings (which we still have). Several planks and the stern were replaced. The cockpit was totally redone to be more efficient while maintaining a look of authenticity. The newly renovated cockpit allows for plenty of locker space, easy access to the engine and room for two 45-gallon stainless tanks (one for diesel and one for water). The deck was replaced with double plywood and fiber cover. All electrical systems were replaced, and several 12-Volt outlets installed in addition to two 120 AC outlets. An intelligent charger keeps the batteries topped up. Brand new cushions were fashioned. Two new wooden masts were built, saving considerable weight atop. A new boomkin and bowsprit were designed. The restoration was done exceptionally by seasoned professionals with no expenses spared and a firm commitment to originality.

    Sailing

Since her restoration, Aegir has been cruising between Bar Harbor and Virginia, giving us lots of pleasure and plenty of admiring comments. She has also been actively raced with an outstanding collection of trophies as proof. The sail collection has been constantly upgraded and consists of a mizzen, main, jib, genoa, asymmetric spinnaker and a mizzen staysail. Due to the relatively tall mizzen mast the staysail is big and powerful and easy to set. Aegir sails beautifully! With the self-taking jib, she is easy to sail in tight quarters or short-handed. With a little practice she can sail by herself. A new 28-HP Yanmar engine was recently installed and gives 6.5 knots on ¾ gallon diesel per hour. Aegir comes with a brand-new custom-made winter cover, a wonderful awning that covers the area between the two masts, and a smaller awning for just the cockpit area. She has been maintained professionally and treated as part of the family. We hope to find a good home for her next chapter.
